The Rocky Mountain Chapter - Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (RMC-CHMM) was established to provide hazardous materials managers with an opportunity to interact and share information relevant to the hazardous materials management profession. RMC-CHMM is certified as an official chapter of the Association of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP) - formerly the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM).

AHMP is the membership organization for individuals who have successfully completed the education, experience and testing requirements necessary to become a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM). The CHMM program is administered by the independent certification organization, the Institute for Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM).

It is not necessary to be a CHMM to be a member of the RMC-CHMM. However, only CHMMs can be voting members of the Chapter. We invite interested professionals in the environmental and safety fields to join us and help us grow to become one of the top chapters within AHMP. Contact any member of the Board of Directors or attend any of our meetings for more information.

The Value of the CHMM Certification

Douglas J. Schlagel, P.E., CHMM, RMC Past President

General Statement:    As CHMMs, we recognize the importance of certifying our profession.  We acquired the CHMM certification to demonstrate our technical knowledge, to represent our ethical standards, and to signify our dedication to a reputable professional body.  CHMMs encompass a wide variety of professions.  Many of its members hold other professional certifications, and the CHMM certification is not a competitive credential but a complimentary one.  H. Thomas Brown II, ACHMM Government Affairs Committee Chair, described this relationship in his article, Defining Our Niche, as follows:

"The CHMM additively complements all of the other professional designations by providing multi-disciplinary scientific specialty expertise wherever hazardous materials may be or are anticipated to be an issue.  We would hope that our recommendations are also given due consideration when other professionals are involved in multi-faceted projects.  Ideally, the various specialists work together to develop a viable and responsible solution.  When the workplace demands that Environmental, Safety, and Health professionals take on more and varying responsibilities, the best qualified individuals are likely to be those who hold several of the recognized credentials, including the CHMM."

As such, RMC-CHMM will continue to support the AHMP by promoting our certification and value to the hazardous material community, while understanding the necessity for complimentary skills and related certifications as a whole.

Please visit the AHMP website for additional information on AHMP.
